India’s Rooftop Solar Installations Surge by 86% in 2024

India added 3.2 GW of rooftop solar capacity in 2024, marking an 86% increase from the previous year, according to Mercom India Research’s latest Q4 & Annual 2024 India Rooftop Solar Market Report. The surge was largely fueled by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, with the residential sector accounting for 74% of the total installations.

In the wind power sector, NLC India and Adyant Enersol (Datta Infra) secured bids in SJVN’s auction for 600 MW of inter-state transmission system-connected wind projects. NLC India won 200 MW at a tariff of Rs 3.74/kWh, while Adyant Enersol secured 112 MW at Rs 3.81/kWh. Despite the auction target of 600 MW, only 312 MW was awarded.

Meanwhile, Power Grid Corporation of India (POWERGRID) received letters of intent for three transmission projects worth Rs 107.5 billion (~$1.2 billion) under tariff-based competitive bidding. The projects include transmission systems for renewable energy zones in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh and capacity augmentation in Gujarat.

The Lakshadweep Electricity Department has invited bids for 2,107 kW of rooftop solar systems with battery storage, with submissions due by April 10, 2025. The scope includes a five-year warranty and long-term maintenance.

In Bihar, the State Power Generation Company issued tenders for a 125 MW/500 MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) with viability gap funding support. Bidders must submit proposals by March 23, 2025.

On the clean energy front, the Indian government launched five pilot projects under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, deploying 37 hydrogen-powered buses and trucks along with nine hydrogen refueling stations.

In the power sector, distribution companies (DISCOMs) owed power generators Rs 645.77 billion (~$7.4 billion) in February 2025, up from Rs 615.95 billion in January, according to the Ministry of Power’s PRAAPTI portal.

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded a significant 85% year-over-year increase in green energy trading, with 552 million units (MU) traded in February 2025. The Green Day-Ahead Market accounted for 519 MU, marking a 95% YoY increase.

In global energy developments, Array Technologies, a U.S.-based solar tracker manufacturer, reported $275.2 million in revenue for Q4 2024, down 19.4% YoY, citing average selling price compression despite sales volume growth.

India’s renewable energy sector continues to expand rapidly, driven by government initiatives, competitive auctions, and increased investor interest in clean energy projects.
