Jindal Stainless reduces 1.4 lakh tonnes of CO2 emissions in FY22

Jindal Stainless, the country's largest stainless steel manufacturer, took different steps to reduce 1.4 lakh tonnes (LT) of carbon emissions in the previous fiscal year, according to its Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal.

By 2050, the corporation hopes to be carbon neutral.

To meet the goal, JSL established the role of Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) and recruited Kalyan Kumar Bhattacherjee to the important position, according to a business statement from Jindal.

"We reduced 1.4 LT CO2 in FY22 through various initiatives. From investing in Renewable Energy, Green Hydrogen production to introducing EVs at our manufacturing plants, we are continuously building an ecosystem that supports our environmental, social, and governance goals (ESGs)," he said.

According to JSL, Bhattacherjee will be in charge of driving environmental activities, lowering carbon emissions for the company's present and future capacity growth plans, with the objective of reaching the net-zero target by 2050.

According to Bhattacherjee, JSL is India's first stainless steel manufacturer to establish a Green Hydrogen Plant to produce stainless steel.

"We are continuously investing in low Carbon technologies, recycling process, digitalization and process upgradation for energy efficiency projects," he said.

JSL recently struck an agreement with RenNew Power to establish a utility-scale captive renewable energy plant in Jajpur as part of its carbon reduction strategy. Using a combination of solar and wind power generation technologies, this project will generate 700 million units of sustainable energy per year.

Jindal Stainless has also teamed with Hygenco India to construct a Green Hydrogen Plant in Hisar, which will drastically reduce CO2 emissions.
