MPCB prepares carbon emission inventory of 43 cities

Regarding the 2070 carbon-neutrality target by India at the CoP26 in Glasgow, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) started the preparation for a carbon emission inventory of almost 43 cities in the state.

A greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory- the list of emission sources along with the associated emissions quantified utilising standardised methods, which helps the cities prioritise their pollution source which needs to be targeted. Therefore, decide the amount of action required and the manner in which the fund will be channelised. The project is aimed at lowering the carbon footprint in 43 AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) cities across the state.

The MPCB appointed an agency based in Pune for conducting a GHG emissions inventory of the 43 AMRUT cities, which includes the coastal city of Mumbai as well as industrial cities like Chandrapur and Pune being a part of the “race to zero” UN climate change campaign.

The GHG emission would be estimated based on the guidance offered in the GHG Protocol, the Global Protocol for Community-scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories which is an accounting and reporting standard for cities.

The pilot project shall commence in five cities and this process would be completed within three months. The inventory will provide assistance to the authorities to prepare a plan for reduction of the carbon emission to zero.
