NPCIL and Gujarat Sign MoU to Identify Sites for Nuclear Plants

Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and Gujarat State Electricity Corporation (GSECL) signed a memorandum of understanding on October 1, 2026, to explore and identify suitable sites in Gujarat for new nuclear power projects. The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the two organisations as they assess locations that could support future nuclear power development.

The memorandum was signed in the presence of Rushikesh Patel, Gujarat’s Minister of Energy and Petrochemicals, Panchayat and Rural Housing, and Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs. Ashwini Kumar, Principal Secretary of Gujarat’s Energy and Petrochemicals Department and Chairman of GSECL, and V. Rajesh, Chairman and Managing Director of NPCIL, were the key signatories.

P.S. Karthigeyan, Joint Secretary for Power and Energy Resources at the Department of Atomic Energy, attended the signing ceremony along with senior officials from NPCIL and GSECL. Their participation underlined the involvement of the state and central authorities in the proposed assessment of nuclear power opportunities in Gujarat.

Under the agreement, NPCIL and GSECL will share relevant information, identify potential sites and assess their technical suitability for nuclear power development. The assessment is intended to examine Gujarat’s potential to contribute to India’s expanding nuclear energy programme and support the planning of future nuclear power projects.

The collaboration comes as nuclear power is expected to play a larger role in India’s energy strategy by strengthening energy security and supporting the transition towards low-carbon electricity. It also reflects the organisations’ stated commitment to sustainability, the national vision of Viksit Bharat and India’s objective of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. The memorandum provides a platform for further examination of suitable locations and technical considerations before any project-specific decisions are taken.
