At the fourth Renewable Energy Investor Meet in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was introduced to a groundbreaking innovation: the world's first solar tile made from plastic waste. Developed by a local startup, this solar tile represents a major advancement in sustainable energy solutions and waste management.

Crafted by entrepreneur Shani Pandya, the solar tile is made using over 350 single-use plastic wrappers, transforming waste into a renewable energy source. This innovation addresses both plastic pollution and India's renewable energy objectives. Priced at Rs 1,000, each tile generates 20 watts of electricity. While currently not subsidised, government support is being considered for this eco-friendly technology. The tile's design is versatile, making it suitable for residential rooftops, footpaths, and smart city infrastructure, including e-mobility charging stations.

Despite its lightweight nature, the 3 kg solar tile boasts high durability and can withstand foot traffic without damage, making it suitable for various applications. The tile presented to PM Modi featured an image of Gujarat's Modhera Sun Temple, India's first solar-powered village, highlighting the state's commitment to renewable energy.

During his visit to the startup's stall, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm for the project, which aligns with the government's goals of promoting renewable energy and eliminating single-use plastics. This multi-purpose solar tile is a significant advancement in sustainable technology, offering a practical solution to the dual challenges of waste management and renewable energy production.
