Toyota Boosts V2G Research with San Diego Gas & Electric

Toyota is expanding its research on Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology in collaboration with the San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E). The project aims to explore the potential of using electric vehicle (EV) batteries to provide valuable grid services.

V2G technology allows bidirectional flow of electricity between EVs and the power grid. By tapping into the energy stored in EV batteries during peak demand periods, V2G can help stabilize the grid and reduce strain during high power consumption. Additionally, it enables EV owners to use their vehicles as a mobile power source during outages or emergencies.

The expanded research partnership between Toyota and SDG&E will deploy 20 new plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) across a broad range of customers, including local businesses, public agencies, and educational institutions. The vehicles will be equipped with hardware and software to support the V2G system.

Through this research project, Toyota aims to gather real-world data on vehicle performance, user behavior, and grid interaction. The information collected will help optimize the design and functionality of future V2G systems. Toyota sees V2G as a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and resilient energy future.

The collaboration with SDG&E builds upon previous joint research projects between the two companies. Toyota and SDG&E have been exploring V2G technology since 2013 in an effort to create a more reliable and efficient electricity grid.

Both Toyota and SDG&E view V2G technology as a critical component of the shift towards renewable energy and sustainable transportation. EVs, when integrated with the power grid through V2G systems, can play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources.

Toyota and SDG&E's continued research efforts seek to unlock the potential value of EVs beyond transportation. By leveraging the immense energy storage capacity of EV batteries, V2G technology can contribute to a more flexible, reliable, and resilient grid while benefiting EV owners and the wider community.

As the world moves towards decarbonization and greater adoption of renewable energy sources, collaborations like the one between Toyota and SDG&E are crucial in developing innovative solutions for a sustainable energy future. V2G technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we power our homes, businesses, and transportation systems, creating a more efficient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
