UCIL Providing Essential Resource Base for India’s Nuclear Power Programme

The Uranium Corporation of India (UCIL), a public sector undertaking under the Department of Atomic Energy, has marked six decades of service to India’s nuclear power programme. The organisation’s Diamond Jubilee Year began on October 4, 2026, commemorating its incorporation on October 4, 1967.

The celebrations brought together senior officials, scientists, engineers, technical personnel, employees and other stakeholders. The event recognised UCIL’s institutional journey and focused on the opportunities and responsibilities associated with the future expansion of nuclear energy in India.

Dr Ajit Kumar Mohanty, Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, said the milestone highlighted UCIL’s contribution to the country’s nuclear programme. He also underlined the importance of continued innovation and capability building as India advances its Nuclear Energy Mission, according to an official statement.

Seema Jain, Member-Finance of the Atomic Energy Commission, said the anniversary represented six decades of scientific capability, institutional experience and dedicated national service. She also paid tribute to Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha and other pioneers who established the foundations of India’s uranium mining and processing capabilities.

Jain said UCIL had helped build indigenous capability in uranium mining and processing, while successive generations of employees had worked in challenging conditions to sustain the national effort. She added that the milestone offered an opportunity to recognise the people, technologies and systems supporting the sector.

Dr Kacham Anand Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of UCIL, said the anniversary was a significant milestone for the organisation. He said UCIL had developed expertise and infrastructure in uranium mining and processing over six decades, while strengthening its capabilities in technology, safety and environmental management. The organisation also opened its operations and facilities to the media during the celebrations.

Established in 1967, UCIL remains an integral part of India’s indigenous uranium mining and processing framework, providing the resource base required for the country’s nuclear power programme.
