Vedanta TSPL maintained power supply during Operation Sindoor alert

As the nation marks one year of Operation Sindoor, the night of May 7, 2025 continues to stand out as a moment of heightened tension across northern India. With reports of drone sightings emerging across parts of Punjab, Rajasthan and Jammu, uncertainty spread quickly, putting critical infrastructure under sharp focus.

Bathinda, home to a strategic Indian Air Force base, was among the locations placed on high alert. Located around 50 kilometres from Bathinda and about 125 kilometres from the international border, Vedanta Power’s Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) plant in Punjab’s Mansa district emerged as a key pillar in maintaining stable electricity supply during the period.

TSPL is a 1,980 MW thermal power plant that supplies nearly 35 percent of Punjab’s electricity demand. Despite the security situation, the facility continued uninterrupted power generation, ensuring electricity availability for households, hospitals, industries and essential infrastructure across the state.

Vedanta Power said the plant activated a continuity and safety framework to ensure stable operations while safeguarding employees, business partner teams and their families. Workforce deployment was streamlined to retain only essential operational staff on-site, while relocation support was arranged for those requiring assistance.

Preparedness measures were intensified across the facility, including blackout simulations, evacuation rehearsals and mock drills conducted during both day and night. Emergency response and safe shutdown procedures were reinforced through refresher training sessions. The plant also strengthened its communication systems by introducing additional landlines and updated emergency contact protocols.

The response was supported through coordination with district administration officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, local police authorities and emergency services in Mansa and Bathinda districts. Enhanced police patrolling around the plant, healthcare tie-ups with nearby hospitals, ambulance readiness and logistical preparedness were also implemented.

Vedanta Power said employee readiness remained a key priority, with regular awareness sessions on emergency response, evacuation protocols and cybersecurity vigilance. Essential food and canteen supplies were also stocked to support uninterrupted on-site operations.

The experience at TSPL highlights the increasing importance of energy infrastructure resilience and coordinated response systems, as global geopolitical uncertainties continue to place greater emphasis on energy security.

Beyond power generation, TSPL has also contributed to regional development through community initiatives. Over the past five years, the plant’s programmes have impacted nearly 3,00,000 lives through healthcare, education, livelihood support and rural development interventions.
