India has emerged as the global leader in LEED zero certified green building projects, surpassing the United States and China, according to the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI). LEED zero certification acknowledges projects that have achieved net zero or net positive status in carbon, energy, water, or waste categories. Realty firm DLF and FMCG player ITC are at the forefront of the LEED zero green certification initiative in India. The certified projects span various sectors, including office spaces, hospitality facilities, retail malls, industrial manufacturing projects, and data centers. India currently boasts 73 LEED zero certified projects, accounting for 45 per cent of the total certifications worldwide. Haryana and Tamil Nadu are leading in terms of certifications. The United States and China rank second and third, respectively, with 47 (30 per cent) and 15 (10 per cent) certifications. DLF, an India-based real estate developer, holds the top position globally with 45 LEED zero certifications, followed by the ITC Group with 15 certifications. However, it is worth noting that nearly one-third of India's carbon emissions originate from the building and construction sector.GBCI India's Managing Director, Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, emphasised the crucial role buildings play in achieving global climate goals due to their significant carbon emissions. India's leadership in LEED Zero projects reflects its commitment to sustainability and the adoption of innovative green building practices.
