Delhi govt's final nod for 3 flyovers on Outer Ring Road

In Delhi, three new flyovers taken up at a cost of Rs 542-crore on a 7.7 km stretch on Outer Ring Road got the go-ahead in a PWD meeting on April 25. The three flyovers between Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad Chowk are part of the Rs 2,200 crore project that seeks to make Outer Ring Road signal-free between Vikaspuri and Wazirabad.

Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said that work will start in the first week of May and is likely to be over in 24 months, said . The flyovers, to be built at Bhalaswa Chowk, Mukundpur Chowk and Burari Chowk, will ensure signal-free movement between Mukarba Chowk and Wazirabad Chowk, with a bus lane, a green belt, footpaths, a cycle track and rainwater harvesting facilities, he added.

A PWD official said that commuters will be able to avoid red lights at three major intersections. These include the Bhalaswa crossing, road number 51 crossing (Mukundpur Chowk) and the Burari Chowk crossing (the Nirankari Samagam intersection). This is expected to improve traffic circulation at Mukundpur, Burari, Nirankari colony and Bhalaswa, said officials.

The project will also include widening of the eight-lane National Highway 1 to 12 lanes. Around 10.5 km of the road will be widened to 12 lanes before starting the construction of the 600-700m-wide flyovers, said a senior official. Two additional loops will be built at Mukundpur Chowk for a right turn while four foot overbridges along the stretch are also part of the plan.
