CIDCO Fast Tracks Water Projects To Meet 2050 Navi Mumbai Demand

The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has launched a suite of water infrastructure works to secure an estimated 1,257 million litre per day demand for Navi Mumbai by 2050.

Hetawane Water Supply Scheme
Upgrades are progressing in four phases: the treatment plant is 41 per cent complete, the raw water tunnel 8.5 per cent, and the pure water tunnel 25.7 per cent. Full commissioning is targeted for June 2029.

New Sources
CIDCO is developing the Kondhane Dam on the Ulhas River, set to deliver 250 MLD initially, rising to 350 MLD. Together with the Balganga Dam, both schemes are due within four to five years.

Interim Boost
To bridge short term needs, the Maharashtra Government in August 2020 approved an extra 120 MLD from the Hetawane Dam, at a cost of Rs 1.198 billion. This lifts CIDCO’s total allocation from the reservoir to 270 MLD.

Officials say the combined projects will provide a resilient, long term supply for the region’s expanding population and industrial base while supporting Navi Mumbai’s rapid urban growth.
