GHMC to award contract to Ramky

It seems the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) may not delay further the awarding of solid waste management contract to the Hyderabad-based firm Ramky.

Under public private partnership (PPP) mode, the GHMC announced the Rs 434 crore Integrated Solid Waste Management project.

According to an agreement signed with Ramky in February 2008, the civic body was to hand over door-to-door collection and transportation of garbage to the company. However, workers of the corporation opposed the awarding of the contract to the company.

Therefore, till now, only treatment and disposal of the waste was being implemented at Jawaharnagar dump yard. The project developer has been doing sanitary land fill, capping and treating the waste by constructing compost and leachate plants.

After a long delay, now the corporation has reportedly decided to brave the protest and give the contract initially for two zones - south and central - out of the five zones.

The GHMC is reportedly working out a strategy on how to tackle the issue if workers protest again. Mayor Mohd Majid Hussain had announced that two circles in south zone would be handed over to Ramky for collection and transportation of garbage three months ago, but backtracked on his announcement after a day-long protest by the workers.
