Work on MC Road in Kottayam to begin in May

In Kottayam, MC Road's Chengannur-Muvattupuzha stretch is all set to get a facelift with the second phase development work on the stretch likely to begin this May. According Kerala State Transport Project (KSTP) officials, a global tender for the work will be notified by the end of this month. Currently, an eight-member team from the World Bank are in Thiruvananthapuram holding discussions with the KSTP officials about various works including works on the MC Road, which will be funded by the bank.

The work on the 88-km stretch is expected to cost Rs 420 crore. Solar lights will be used as streetlights in the second phase development works and this will be for the first time that solar lights are used in a KSTP project, said a senior KSTP official.

The second phase work will be carried out on two stretches-Chengannur-Ettumanoor (47km) and Ettumanoor-Muvattupuzha (41km). Work on a 2.2-km bypass in Thiruvalla connecting Mazhuvangad Chira and Ramanchira on the MC Road will also be carried out.

Construction of two major bridges and eight minor bridges are also included in the second phase. The two major bridges will come between Chengannur and Thiruvalla. The existing bridges -- Kallisery bridge (Irappuzha) over Pamba river and Thondara bridge over Manimala river -- are in a state of disrepair. Thondara, which is one of the oldest bridges in the state, is the first prestressed bridge in the state.

The World Bank team will examine the detailed project report prepared by a Bangalore-based consultant for the KSTP. Tender will be floated after getting the bank's clearance and the bid will be finalised in 45 days after the tender is notified. After the evaluation process and clearance from the bank, the contract of the work would be awarded in May.
