India's Top Young Builders

The 7th CONSTRUCTION WORLD ARCHITECT AND BUILDER AWARDS 2012 (CWAB'Y) had it all! With the event this year awarding Youth, (hence the 'Y' in the logo), the evening at Taj Lands End on October 12 had an irrepressible buzz: young achievers shared the podium with venerated stalwarts while the industry applauded their achievements.

Last year, awardee Brinda Somaya asked us to look at recognising the work of younger architects. Taking this further, we did just that: awarded young architects and builders. The process that we followed was two pronged: a nationwide survey amongst industry professionals and a closed door jury meet to select the Top Young Architects and Builders. The criteria for pre-selection - to be put on the voting list - was as follows:

For architects: Under 45 years of age with a minimum industry experience of five years.

For builders: Business head of the firm, under 45 years of age, with a minimum industry experience of five years.

The list that was put to vote was arrived at through an in-depth process of contacting architects, material suppliers, industry associations and consultants for names that fit the bill. Based on this, a masterlist of 54 architects and 58 builders was formed. The list was then put to vote amongst a database of thousands of targeted industry professionals, created by ASAPP Info, our research division. We polled over 437 responses for the architects and 846 responses for the builders. A final selection of 18 builders and 20 architects was made and put to an august jury - one each for architects and builders. They were presented to the jury through a comprehensive updated profile and a two minute PPT/AV, sent by the shortlisted participants. Based on this, the jury voted to arrive at 'India's Top Young Builders and Young Architects.' (For full coverage on the winning architects please see the November issue of CW INTERIORS)

The 10 member expert jury for builders comprised Shekhar Patki, Principal Designer & Proprietor, PG Patki Architects Pvt Ltd; Shimul Javeri Kadri, Principal Architect, SJK Architects; Jayant Acharya, Director?(Commercial & Marketing), Member of the Board, JSW Steel Ltd; BK Batra, Deputy Managing Director, IDBI Bank; Ewart Lazarus, Executive Director, Chowgule Construction Technologies Pvt Ltd; Narendra Ajugia, Managing Director, Shirish Patel & Associates Consultants; Surajit Ray, Managing Director & Country Head, Ulma Formwork Systems; Amit Maitra, Managing Director, Lerch Bates Pvt Ltd; Digant L Kapadia, Managing Director, BE Billimoria; and Jeremy Lester, Chief Executive International, Grocon.
