Madurai to get S'pore, Dubai flight services next year

In Tamil Nadu, Madurai airport will get international connectivity to Singapore and Dubai, which will possibly materialise by next year and the Union Civil Aviation Ministry is working on the same. This was announced by Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, KC Venugopal at the inauguration of the Virudhunagar - Manamadurai BG section at Aruppukottai on July 14.

The Minister said that international connectivity to Singapore and Dubai from Madurai airport has been a long-pending demand of the people in southern districts and the ministry has approached the country's national airliner, Air India Express in this regard. However, there is an issue of shortage of flight crew to operate more flights.

The international connectivity to Dubai and Singapore from Madurai airport would materialise most probably by next year, he stated. The government is recruiting people for the flight crew and the issue will be resolved shortly, he added. Madurai at present is connected to Colombo with SpiceJet and Sri Lankan carrier, Mihin Lanka operating flights between the two destinations. The public forums and trade and industrial associations, for long have been demanding and staging protests for more international flights.
