Land will be given to the Dharavi redevelopment plan by the railway

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is likely to move forward more quickly as the Ministry of Railways has promised to give the state government the land it needs for the project within a month.

The delay in transferring around 45 acre of railway land has halted Dharavi's redevelopment.

Rahul Shewale, a member of the Lok Sabha, met Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Railway Minister, in Delhi to talk about the situation. Shewale said, “Additionally, the state government gave the railroads Rs 8 bn in exchange for the land. The Dharavi Redevelopment Project, however, ran into difficulties because the state was not given ownership of the site."

The agreement was made on February 24, 2019, during a meeting between Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister at the time, and Piyush Goyal, the Railway Minister. Only 45 acre of the 107 acre needed by the state government were made available by the railway.

But the state was not given actual possession, which many ascribe to an ego conflict between the Uddhav Thackeray-led administration and the Centre.
