Residents urge extension of CCTV cameras to residential areas

As Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL) progresses with its plan to deploy 3,300 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras throughout the city, residents are advocating for the extension of surveillance systems into residential neighbourhoods and link roads. With a substantial number of cameras already operational, locals are highlighting the need to deter petty crimes such as pickpocketing and snatching in these areas.

While the existing cameras concentrate on securing main roads and key localities, residents stress that comprehensive coverage of residential zones is equally essential to curb criminal activities. "Necessary surveillance systems deter criminals from committing crimes. However, most residential areas lack this facility, providing miscreants a safer environment to execute thefts and robberies," shared Mukta Nandan, a resident of Ashiana Nagar.

According to Priya, the Public Relations Officer of PSCL, approximately 2,200 CCTV cameras have been installed as part of the project, with ongoing construction works contributing to the delay in deploying the remaining cameras. She emphasised that the cameras are intricately linked to the optical fibre cable network, currently under implementation in various locations. Efforts are being made to enhance coverage by placing cameras at the junctions of main roads and link roads, including service lanes.

Ravi Ranjan, a resident of Patel Nagar, suggested a collaborative approach involving community contributions. He proposed that shop owners and residential colonies gather resources to set up CCTV cameras in their respective areas. This partnership between the community and administration is seen as a practical solution to enhance surveillance and overall safety.

In the pursuit of a safer environment, Patna residents are actively engaging with PSCL's initiative, not only advocating for extended coverage but also suggesting practical ways to involve local communities in the expansion of surveillance efforts.
