Adani Green Expands BESS Capacity to 6.63 GWh

Adani Green Energy (AGEL) has expanded its operational Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity to 6.63 GWh from 3.55 GWh in June 2026, making up more than half of India’s operational BESS capacity. The company said its storage capacity represents over 50 per cent of the country’s total operational capacity of about 12.6 GWh, based on Central Electricity Authority data as of August 31, 2026, and industry disclosures.

The latest capacity was commissioned at Khavda in Gujarat, where AGEL is developing a 30 GW renewable energy plant across 538 sq km. The company said the 6.63 GWh facility makes Khavda the world’s largest operational battery storage installation at a single location. AGEL reached the milestone within 14 months of starting on-site BESS construction, while the latest addition was commissioned within 10 months of construction beginning.

AGEL said the storage system can hold enough clean energy to power around 2 mn homes a day and help meet peak electricity demand in cities including Nagpur, Patna and Visakhapatnam for several hours. Its capacity is also equivalent to that of more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles fitted with 40 kWh battery packs.

The BESS uses lithium-ion technology integrated with an Energy Management System and automated telemetry. These systems manage charging and discharging, optimise performance and support grid services. The company said battery storage can improve grid stability, manage peak demand, reduce renewable energy curtailment and enable clean electricity to be dispatched when required.

AGEL is on track to add more than 10 GWh of BESS capacity in FY27 and is targeting 50 GWh over the next five years. It is also pursuing pumped storage projects as part of a wider strategy to develop firm and dispatchable renewable power capacity. The company said the expansion would support the integration of renewable energy as India’s electricity demand increases.

We aim to become the single source of truth for project information

Every construction project depends on one critical element: the right drawing reaching the right person at the right time. But fragmented workflows often create costly delays. Rikunj Moradia, Founder, SyncDrawings, explains how digital drawing management can transform project execution. What gap in the construction ecosystem led to the creation of SyncDrawings?I come from a construction background and also run a BIM services firm. During our work, one recurring challenge was drawing accessibility. Construction is completely dependent on drawings, but the way they are managed remains fragmented ..
