APEDA Fortifies Millet Exports with Global Trade Fairs and Promotions

The Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Department of Commerce, has intensified efforts to promote millet exports through trade fairs, exhibitions, and global awareness campaigns. As part of the International Year of Millets 2023, APEDA collaborated with Indian embassies, government departments, and international trade bodies to organise buyer-seller meets, sampling events, millet-themed exhibitions, and branding initiatives. Millets remain a key focus in domestic and global trade fairs where APEDA participates.

The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF), launched by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, is driving the shift towards chemical-free agriculture and supporting the global demand for natural and organic food products. This initiative aims to expand the export potential of India’s certified natural produce.

To strengthen India’s position as a leading agricultural exporter, the government has undertaken several key initiatives, including:

  • Diversifying India’s agricultural export basket by introducing new products.
  • Expanding exports to new international markets and production regions.
  • Enhancing branding and value addition to increase export revenues.
  • Promoting organic and sustainable agriculture.
  • Building capacity among producers to meet global quality and phyto-sanitary standards.
  • Developing sea protocols to support exports of perishable horticultural products.
  • Integrating Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) into the export value chain.
  • Strengthening market access through Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and strategic trade engagements.

To counter protectionist trade policies and eliminate trade barriers, the government is actively engaged in bilateral negotiations with importing countries and is advocating for duty-free/concessional access through FTAs. In cases of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) or technical trade barriers (TBT), India raises concerns through bilateral discussions and the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure fair market access.

These initiatives reflect India's commitment to boosting agricultural exports, supporting farmers, and positioning the country as a global leader in millet and natural food products.
