Enervoxa Plans Rare Earth Processing Plant In India

Canadian climate technology developer Enervoxa plans to hold talks with Vedanta, Hindalco Industries Limited and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) to explore setting up a processing plant in India to extract rare earth elements from the red mud byproduct of aluminium production. The company is evaluating eastern India as a potential location and is engaging with aluminium producers and other industrial partners to examine commercial feasibility and integrate an end to end value chain. The initiative addresses industrial waste management and critical minerals supply concerns.

A commercial scale plant is estimated to cost about 250 mn dollars to 350 mn dollars and could be funded through a mix of strategic equity and project financing, the chief executive indicated to Reuters while outlining development options. Enervoxa has spent eight years developing its process to recover rare earth concentrates from bauxite residue and is assessing whether to carry out full processing in India or to produce a concentrate for downstream refining. The company is also evaluating financing structures and partner roles for different stages of project execution.

Recovering rare earth concentrates from red mud has gained momentum as nations seek alternatives to concentrated global processing capacity. The recovered products are expected to include iron oxide, coagulation agents, pigments and titanium bearing materials alongside rare earth concentrates that feed technologies ranging from mobile devices to electric vehicle motors and defence systems. Industry observers note potential downstream demand if consistent concentrate quality can be achieved.

Enervoxa intends to approach engineering, steel and critical minerals processing firms to build an integrated value chain and will seek government support and collaboration with research institutes working on metal extraction and enrichment from red mud. The company is also evaluating opportunities in North America and Southeast Asia while continuing commercial discussions with potential Indian partners to advance project planning and financing. Stakeholders are expected to assess timelines, regulatory clearances and logistics before firm commitments are made.
