The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to establish a city-wide network of 4,287 CCTV cameras by December to strengthen surveillance and traffic enforcement across Gurugram. The expanded network will also monitor drainage infrastructure and waterlogging hotspots to enable real-time monitoring and reduce response times during monsoon events. The control room will receive alerts when water accumulates at any location, after which response teams are expected to reach sites within minutes to facilitate drainage and clearance. GMDA Chief Executive Officer P C Meena reviewed the progress of the Smart City CCTV project and directed officials to expedite Phase II and the memorandum of understanding (MoU) works with Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) and Utkrisht Society for Safe Haryana. He instructed Head Smart City Dr Susheel Kumar to integrate the expanding network with GMDA's Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for effective traffic management and enforcement. Surveillance coverage will extend to key starting and confluence points of drains, waterlogging spots and identified garbage dumping sites. The expanded network will be built around automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), red light violation detection (RLVD), pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras and speed radar technologies to reduce manual intervention in traffic enforcement and enable automatic challaning for violations. The objective is to improve compliance, encourage disciplined driving and lower the incidence of traffic violations, accidents and fatalities. Phase I comprises 1,200 cameras already installed, including 750 general surveillance units, 308 ANPR cameras, 102 RLVD cameras, 28 PTZ cameras and 48 face recognition units. Phase II will add 2,722 cameras, comprising 1,406 ANPR cameras, 102 RLVD cameras, 74 PTZ cameras, 759 general surveillance cameras, 347 face recognition cameras and 20 speed radars. Under the MSIL MoU, 365 cameras and 29 speed radars are being deployed at 23 junctions, with eight along the Southern Peripheral Road, four between Cyber City and Golf Course, five along MG Road and six on Old Delhi Road. MSIL has proposed a second phase to install 1,000 additional cameras at 69 junctions across adjoining industrial and residential clusters ahead of the December deadline.
