IHCL Signs Taj Hotel in Cairo, Enters Egypt

The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has announced the signing of a Taj hotel in Cairo, marking the iconic brand’s entry into Egypt and a significant milestone in its international expansion strategy. The development strengthens IHCL’s presence in key global gateway cities and reflects its focus on extending the Taj brand’s global footprint.

Commenting on the signing, Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IHCL, said Cairo’s rich cultural heritage and its strategic position at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Europe have long made it a vital hub for global tourism and trade. He noted that the debut of the Taj brand in Cairo aligns with IHCL’s international growth strategy of establishing a presence in major gateway cities while extending the brand’s hallmark warm and sincere service. He also expressed appreciation for the support extended by Egyptian Prime Minister H.E. Dr Mostafa Madbouly towards the project.

The 300-key Taj Cairo will be located at Opera Square, a historic precinct in the heart of the city, overlooking the Azbakeya Garden. Situated within Cairo’s heritage zone, the hotel will preserve key architectural elements of the existing Grand Continental Hotel, while integrating modern amenities and Taj’s service standards. The property is expected to feature multiple dining venues, wellness facilities and banqueting spaces catering to business and social events.

Hisham El Demery, Chief Executive Officer of the Egyptian General Company for Tourism and Hotels (EGOTH), said the transformation of the Grand Continental Hotel into Taj Cairo represents a defining moment in efforts to restore Egypt’s architectural heritage. He added that EGOTH, as the custodian of the landmark, is committed to honouring its legacy through thoughtful redevelopment and world-class standards, and that the partnership with IHCL will help create a destination contributing meaningfully to Cairo’s tourism landscape and its ongoing revitalisation.
