IIT Madras and Bechtel India Launch Rs. 33 mn Construction Robotics Lab

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has launched a Rs. 33 mn robotics laboratory on its campus in collaboration with Bechtel India. The facility is intended to accelerate research, innovation and industry applications in robotics and automation for the construction and infrastructure sectors, while creating opportunities for students and researchers.

The laboratory was inaugurated on 22 September 2026. The partnership was formalised through a memorandum of understanding signed by Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT Madras, faculty members Prof. T. Asokan and Prof. Koshy Varghese, who will lead the lab, and Raja Yeluri, managing director of Bechtel India, along with Ravi Tata, the company’s robotics manager.

The inauguration was attended by senior representatives from Bechtel, IIT Madras faculty, staff and students, as well as members of Bechtel’s leadership and project teams. The institute said the facility would support research and development in construction robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies.

Under the collaboration, Bechtel India will provide industry inputs for curriculum development and facilitate mentorship by its professionals. The company will also explore internship opportunities at its offices for selected candidates, while offering technical guidance, access to relevant resources and support for joint innovation activities.

The lab will undertake joint research, consulting and technology development, with potential outputs including research publications, patents, prototypes and industry demonstrations. It is also designed to give students practical exposure to emerging technologies and their applications, strengthening preparation for careers in deep-tech and advanced engineering. Bechtel’s engineering, procurement and construction expertise is expected to inform project exploration, testing and technology demonstrations conducted through the facility.
