The Prime Ministers of India and Mauritius, Shri Narendra Modi and Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, engaged in extensive discussions on bilateral relations during Modi’s state visit to Mauritius from March 11-12, 2025. Both leaders reaffirmed the deep historical, cultural, and economic ties between the two nations and committed to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.Acknowledging India’s long-standing support for Mauritius, particularly in its socio-economic development, the leaders emphasised Mauritius’s pivotal role in India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region). They agreed to elevate their relationship by deepening cooperation in political, economic, security, and cultural spheres.India has been a key development partner for Mauritius, contributing to major infrastructure projects such as the Metro Express, New Supreme Court, ENT Hospital, and social housing. The leaders highlighted the significance of Indian-assisted projects in Agalega, particularly in disaster relief efforts. They agreed on further collaborations, including:Delivery of 100 electric buses and charging infrastructureExpansion of High Impact Community Development ProjectsUpgrading 100 km of water pipelinesConstructing a new Parliament building with India’s assistance Redeveloping the Ganga Talao Spiritual SanctuaryIndia pledged continued support for capacity-building programs in Mauritius through training initiatives for civil servants, diplomats, and other officials. The two nations will also collaborate on:Establishing institutional linkages in forensic science, governance, and archivesEnhancing e-judiciary systems and digital records managementExpanding cooperation in cybersecurity and digital public infrastructureWith the India-Mauritius Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) strengthening trade ties, both countries agreed to:Convene the High-Power Joint Trade Committee to boost economic engagementFacilitate trade settlements in local currenciesPromote investment in sectors like ocean economy, pharmaceuticals, and fintechIndia reaffirmed its commitment to Mauritius’s maritime security through ongoing support for its Coast Guard fleet, joint maritime surveillance, and the establishment of a National Maritime Information Sharing Centre. The leaders also emphasised the strategic importance of Agalega’s newly developed runway and jetty.Mauritius acknowledged India’s support in developing its space capabilities, including the launch of a Mauritius-India satellite. Both sides agreed to collaborate on climate forecasting and disaster resilience. Additionally, India will assist Mauritius in expanding its healthcare infrastructure and drug rehabilitation programs, while strengthening traditional medicine cooperation through an AYUSH Centre of Excellence.Recognising their shared heritage, India and Mauritius pledged to preserve historical records of indentured Indian labourers and enhance cultural exchanges. They also agreed to boost diaspora engagement through initiatives like Pravasi Bharatiya Divas and research collaborations on the Girmitya legacy.India reiterated its strong support for Mauritius in its discussions with the UK over the Chagos Islands. Both nations will continue collaborating on regional platforms such as the Indian Ocean Rim Association, International Solar Alliance, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.The leaders expressed satisfaction with their discussions, affirming that the India-Mauritius partnership has reached a new strategic depth.
