India Signs $248 Million Deal for T-72 Tank Engines

The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport (RoE) for the procurement of 1000 HP engines for the Indian Army’s T-72 tanks. The deal includes engines in fully built, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions.

As part of the agreement, the contract also involves the transfer of technology (ToT) from RoE to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited’s Heavy Vehicle Factory in Avadi, Chennai. This will enable local integration and licensed production of the engines, supporting the "Make in India" initiative in the defense sector.

The Indian Army’s current T-72 tank fleet is equipped with 780 HP engines. Upgrading to 1000 HP engines is expected to significantly enhance battlefield mobility and offensive capability.
