Indian Auto Industry Records Best August Retail as Alternatives Lead

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said the Indian automobile industry registered its best-ever August retail performance, with total vehicle retail registrations reaching 2,423,201 units and year-on-year growth of 17.51 per cent. Month-on-month retail sales slipped 6.48 per cent as seasonal monsoon patterns and calendar shifts moved festival buying into September. The report attributed the overall gain to rising consumer preference for alternative powertrains and sustained demand across segments.

Total passenger vehicle retail reached 402,398 units in August, recording year-on-year growth of 16.14 per cent and achieving a milestone of 0.4 million (mn) units for the first time in the month. In passenger vehicle sales, compressed natural gas (CNG) cars accounted for 25.28 per cent of the mix, hybrids secured 9.04 per cent and electric vehicle (EV) sales made up 7.63 per cent. Across the broader market, total EV sales were 298,448 units, taking overall EV penetration to 12.3 per cent.

Dealers reported that lower running costs and buyer hesitation over E20 petrol shifted demand toward CNG, hybrid and electric options, even as petrol remained the largest standalone fuel category. Rural passenger vehicle sales expanded 24.99 per cent compared with urban growth of 10.93 per cent. Inventory in passenger vehicles rose by five days over July to between 38 and 40 days, well above the recommended 21-day level, and FADA warned that showroom conversion in the September to November festive window will determine seasonal stability.

Segment data showed two-wheeler registrations at 1,714,610 units, up 19.69 per cent, and commercial vehicle retail rose 14.45 per cent to 90,769 units. Wheeled construction equipment increased 31.45 per cent to 5,166 units and three-wheelers rose 8.64 per cent to 122,281 units. Tractor sales were flat at 87,977 units, up 0.84 per cent year on year but down 25.03 per cent month on month amid a 13 per cent monsoon deficit across 14 states. FADA leadership said the structural shift in passenger vehicle powertrains was the defining development, noting alternative fuels combined accounted for 41.95 per cent against petrol at 40.85 per cent.
