Minister Lays Foundation Stone for Assam Medical Expansion

In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in Northeast India, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, laid the foundation stone for a 37-bed patient care cabin facility at Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh, on 4 March 2025.

The four-storied facility, developed with an investment of Rs 889 million, will provide advanced medical care and fully furnished patient cabins, addressing the growing demand for affordable, high-quality treatment. The project is being funded by Oil India Limited (OIL) as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

Strengthening India's Healthcare Landscape Speaking at the event, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised the transformation of India's healthcare sector under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership:

"Under PM Modi’s visionary leadership, India’s healthcare system has been revolutionised, ensuring accessibility and affordability for all. The Ayushman Arogya Bharat initiative is redefining healthcare, making world-class treatment accessible to every citizen. A Viksit Bharat (Developed India) begins with a healthy Bharat, and we are committed to achieving healthcare excellence for all."

AMCH: A Pillar of Northeast India's Healthcare System Reflecting on AMCH’s legacy, the Minister highlighted its pivotal role in serving Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and neighbouring states:

"As the pioneering medical institution of Northeast India, AMCH has been a backbone of healthcare in the region. This expansion is not just an increase in capacity, but a step towards redefining specialised medical care. The Narendra Modi government remains committed to strengthening India's healthcare system—accessible, affordable, and built to last—ensuring a robust medical foundation for the region."

Inspiring Future Healthcare Professionals Addressing medical students present at the event, Shri Sonowal stressed the importance of holistic well-being and preventive healthcare:

"Good health is a way of life. Through yoga, balanced nutrition, and mindful living, we cultivate strength and resilience. A healthy lifestyle isn’t just about adding years to life—it’s about adding life to years. As future caregivers, you hold the power to heal and transform lives. Your commitment to health and wellness will shape India’s healthcare future and elevate the nation’s well-being."

A Step Towards Medical Excellence The ceremony was attended by Rituparna Baruah, Chairman, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC), Akhim Hazarika, Chairman, District Development Authority (DDA), along with senior officials from OIL and AMCH.

With this expansion at AMCH, Assam strengthens its position as a regional hub for advanced healthcare, reinforcing India’s commitment to quality medical services for all.
