The North East India Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition 2026 concluded in Shillong, outlining a roadmap for economic and infrastructure-led growth across Meghalaya and the Northeast.Organised and hosted by the Government of Meghalaya with the Federation of Industry and Commerce of North East Region and Build India Foundation, the second day of the summit focused on tourism, MSME funding, startups, green energy and next-generation technologies.The event was attended by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister for Tourism; Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Chief Minister, Meghalaya; and other officials and stakeholders.In his keynote address, Shekhawat said the Northeast is witnessing a major shift from uncertainty to confidence and growth. He noted that the participation of leaders from across the region reflects the spirit of collaboration that will shape its future.He said public development expenditure of over Rs 6 lakh crore in the past decade, along with investments of more than Rs 69,000 crore in roads, digital connectivity and rail projects, has positioned the Northeast as a region of opportunity, innovation and strategic importance.Shekhawat added that the Northeast has the potential to emerge as a major hub for trade logistics, tourism, education, innovation and cultural exchange. He said India’s growth story cannot be complete without the northeastern states and increasingly begins from the region.Addressing the summit virtually, Ram Mohan Naidu, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, said NEIINFRA 2026 marks a shift for the region from being known as the “abode of clouds” to the “abode of opportunities”.He highlighted regional connectivity improvements and said the Northeast’s GDP growth rate has reached 13%, nearly double the national average. He also referred to aviation-related milestones, including expansion of operational airports, upgrades for Shillong Airport and the upcoming operationalisation of Tura Airport in Meghalaya.Naidu said the new UDAN scheme will develop at least one heliport in every district across the region to connect local communities, support tourism and unlock economic opportunities.Sniawbhalang Dhar, Deputy Chief Minister, Meghalaya, said the summit marks a new chapter for the state, shifting focus from basic infrastructure development to building industries and long-term employment.He said Meghalaya is committed to creating a transparent environment for investors, businesses and local entrepreneurs. He also highlighted the state’s tourism potential and described Meghalaya as one of the safest destinations in the country.Shakil P Ahammed, Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, said the Northeast has reached a point where the runway is clear for collective growth. He highlighted the Union Government’s commitment to the region and proposed recognising tourism infrastructure as sovereign capital.He also suggested expanding Meghalaya’s 70% homestay subsidy model across other states to promote community-based tourism and make travel more affordable.Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner and Secretary, Public Works Department, Government of Meghalaya, said prosperity in the region depends on states growing together as complementary partners. He said the Northeast has the vision, talent and resources to become one of India’s most dynamic economic regions through partnerships, coordination and implementation.Awards were presented to exhibitors during the event. In the MSME category, Dak-ti Craft won for display and engagement, followed by Naira Travels and Nela Handlooms. In the main exhibitors category, Jubilant eSport and Allied Safety Equipment received top honours, while Canboo was named Champion Exhibitor.The event also saw the release of the Vision Report 2047, Ashtalakshmi, outlining a pathway to transform the eight northeastern states into a modern and prosperous region. The Tourism Infrastructure Report and a Knowledge Report on development, industrial infrastructure, aviation and airports were also released.The opening day had brought together more than 1,500 delegates, eight Union Ministries and all eight Northeastern States. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, attended as Chief Guest, while Conrad K Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, were also present.A key highlight of the opening day was the announcement of a Rs 39,800 crore infrastructure package for Meghalaya.NEIINFRA 2026 positions Meghalaya as a key platform for long-term public-private partnerships aimed at converting regional challenges into opportunities. The summit also reinforces the Northeast’s role as a critical driver in realising the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
