Every year, we observe Engineer's Day on September 15th, and World Architecture Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October, which falls on October 4th this year. Since the current month and the next mark these important days, let us look at the institutes in these two areas that remained on top of their games. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras was ranked the country's best higher education institution for the third year in a row by the Education Ministry, which released its India Rankings 2021 under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc)-Bengaluru scored second in rank, followed by IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Roorkee, and IIT in Guwahati. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at rank 10. IISc scored the top rank among universities, followed by JNU, BHU, Calcutta University, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham-Coimbatore, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)-New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Jadavpur University, University of Hyderabad, and Aligarh Muslim University. Delhi University was ranked 12 in the university rankings and 19 in overall rankings. For engineering institutions, IIT in Madras remained on number one, followed by IIT in Delhi, IIT in Bombay, IIT in Kanpur, IIT in Kharagpur, IIT in Roorkee, IIT in Guwahati, IIT in Hyderabad, National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Tiruchirappalli, and NIT in Karnataka. The Indian Institute of Management (IIT) in Ahmedabad was ranked number one for management institutions, followed by IIM in Bangalore, IIM in Calcutta, IIT in Kozhikode, IIT in Delhi, IIM in Indore, IIM in Lucknow, Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) in Jamshedpur, IIT in Kharagpur, and IIT in Bombay. For the research institution, IISc was ranked the best as this category was included for the first time. Miranda House-Delhi continued to be the country's best college, followed by Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Loyola College. There was a need for developing regional ranking frameworks and growing participation by institutions. In 2016, the ministry launched the rankings and has added more categories over the years, said Dharmendra Pradhan, Education Minister, while releasing the rankings. The ministry said this year, almost 4,030 institutions had applied for rankings. The institutions are evaluated on their teaching, outreach, graduation outcomes, research and inclusivity, and perception. This year, a notable improvement in institutional participation in the rankings exercises shows its recognition amongst India's institutions of higher education as a fair and transparent ranking exercise, it said.
