Rs 35,400 Million Plan To Transform Sambalpur Transport And Agriculture

The union Education Minister announced a development plan worth Rs 35,400 million (mn) aimed at transforming Sambalpur's transport and agricultural sectors. The initiative is scheduled for implementation over two years and will involve the public works department and research and development departments. The plan is intended to strengthen the district's transportation network while enhancing agricultural and allied activities through coordinated interventions.

Major projects include construction of a ring road, road improvements across multiple locations, overbridges and other ancillary works being executed at pace. Officials indicated that the interventions will prioritise education, healthcare, employment and livelihoods and will directly benefit around 1.5 mn residents. The strategy seeks to integrate infrastructure upgrades with sectoral support to generate broader economic gains.

As an agriculture-driven district, Sambalpur will receive targeted support for farmers, fisheries and dairy sectors, with new warehouses being constructed with assistance from MSCL and plans for an OMFED plant to produce milk powder, yoghurt and other dairy products to aid local producers. On paddy procurement, over 3.1 mn quintals have already been purchased and tokens have been distributed to facilitate procurement of an additional 100,000 quintals. The Krishi Udyami scheme is providing substantial financial aid to empower youth engaged in agriculture.

Beyond production, the government is arranging skill development and international placement opportunities to showcase Sambalpur's workforce, with hospitality youths selected for overseas training programmes supported by the Confederation of Indian Industry in countries such as Japan and Denmark. By coordinating agriculture, horticulture, fisheries and animal husbandry initiatives the plan aims to raise living standards and steer Sambalpur towards modernisation and prosperity. Officials presented the package as part of a broader central strategy to improve farmer incomes and rural livelihoods.
