Steel ministry explores AI adoption for enhanced process optimisation

The Ministry of Steel held a "Chintan Shivir" at Vigyan Bhawan, focusing on advancing artificial intelligence (AI) to optimise processes across the steel sector. In his opening remarks, Secretary Poundrik emphasised the importance of adapting to the evolving global and domestic landscape, urging steel central public sector enterprises (CPSEs) to challenge traditional practices and adopt innovative strategies to boost operational efficiency.

The Secretary called on steel CPSEs to streamline project management, emphasising faster contract finalisation and execution to ensure timely project completion. Presentations on new energy-saving initiatives in blast furnace operations received positive feedback during the event.

Discussions highlighted the potential of AI and machine learning (ML) in enhancing not only production processes but also asset management, safety, quality control, data analytics, environmental impact assessment, and human resources management. Steel CPSE representatives also presented insights on tech upgrades, expedited project timelines, international asset acquisitions, and energy-saving measures to support green steel initiatives.

Secretary Poundrik concluded the session by expressing optimism that the discussions would chart a clear path for the Indian steel sector's growth. The event saw participation from high-level officials, including the Additional Secretary & FA, SAIL Chairman, CPSE CMDs, and over 120 participants from across steel CPSEs. (ET)
