Mercedes-Benz R&D India, TERI Launch Whitepaper on EV Skilling

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have published a first-of-its-kind whitepaper on skilling for EV charging infrastructure, unveiled at the Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2025. Titled EV Charging in India: Ecosystem Perspectives and Skilling Opportunities, the paper underscores the crucial role of charge point operators (CPOs) and highlights the lack of hands-on training, non-standardised modules, and shortage of qualified trainers as top barriers.

Drawing from consultations with 150 experts across the EV value chain, the study notes that nearly 50 per cent of CPO skill requirements are in installation and testing of charging infrastructure and IoT-enabled applications. Other key areas include troubleshooting, service optimisation, and smart grid integration.

To address these gaps, MBRDI and TERI have launched Future-In-Charge under Mercedes-Benz’s Sustainability Garage. Approved by the National Council for Vocational Education and Training (NCVET) and endorsed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the programme blends classroom learning with experiential training, covering EV mobility, battery technology, operations, installation, and safety.

“The project marks a significant milestone in our journey to create landmark developments that blends luxury living with ecological harmony. Yelahanka’s evolving landscape and its proximity to the upcoming biodiversity park make this location truly unique. We are excited to bring a thoughtfully designed residential experience to this vibrant part of Bengaluru,” said Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO, MBRDI.

The first pilot cohort of 60 trainees has commenced at TERI’s Gwal Pahari campus, offering hands-on exposure to charging equipment and case-based learning. Plans are underway to scale the initiative nationwide with academic institutions, CPOs, and industry partners.

“With India accelerating its shift towards clean mobility, building a skilled workforce in EV charging infrastructure is crucial. Future-In-Charge, a joint initiative of TERI and MBRDI, is a forward-looking step to bridge industry needs with youth talent,” added Dr. Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI.

The third edition of Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India brought together policymakers, academia, and industry leaders including Renata Jungo Brüngger of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Santosh Iyer of Mercedes-Benz India, and representatives from NITI Aayog, UNDP, and The Asia Foundation.
