IIT Kharagpur collaborates with Jindal Stainless for metallurgical R&D

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur announced a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jindal Stainless, a leading stainless steel manufacturer, aimed at advancing metallurgical research and development.

In a move to promote collaboration between industry and academia, Jindal Stainless and IIT Kharagpur agreed to collaborate on metallurgical projects. These projects would encompass various areas including process optimisation, materials characterization, and primary alloy production.

The strategic partnership symbolized a significant advancement in the field of metallurgy, with both organizations committing to pioneering developments and fostering an environment of innovation. They aimed to leverage their respective strengths to drive meaningful progress and contribute to the growth of the industry.

Prof. Virendra K Tewari, the Director of IIT Kharagpur, expressed that by amalgamating the academic expertise of IIT Kharagpur with that of Jindal Stainless, India's largest stainless steel manufacturer, they aimed to tackle critical challenges and explore new opportunities in metallurgy. He emphasized that IIT KGP was well-positioned to offer technical and operational solutions. Their shared vision involved pushing the boundaries of innovation, nurturing transformative solutions, and ushering in a new era of excellence in stainless steel technology, in alignment with the objectives of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) under Vikshit Bharat 2047.

Abhyuday Jindal, the Managing Director of Jindal Stainless, stated that the partnership would enable them to leverage cutting-edge research in metallurgy to develop tangible solutions for the benefit of both the industry and society. He viewed the MoU as a testament to their commitment to shaping the trajectory of stainless steel technology and making significant strides in the industry, thus contributing to the collective goal of building a self-reliant India.

As per the terms of the MoU, IIT Kharagpur would offer technical consultancy and engage in academic and industrial research to enhance productivity and process improvement at Jindal Stainless. The collaboration would involve conducting lab-scale experiments, facilitating material characterization techniques, and supporting modeling and simulation studies. The emphasis would be on promoting sustainable metallurgical practices through waste reduction, recycling, and water conservation.
