Airport Corridor in Thiruvananthapuram Set for Major Revamp

The road corridor linking the domestic and international terminals of Thiruvananthapuram Airport is poised for a significant makeover under the City Beautification Project. The six-kilometre stretch, a crucial access route for air travellers, will be transformed with landscaped greenery, improved walkways, pedestrian-friendly amenities, artistic lighting, and vibrant wall art reflecting Kerala’s cultural heritage and the identity of the capital city.
Rajesh P. N., the state nodal officer for the initiative, stated that the project’s scope goes beyond visual enhancement. “We aim to improve walkability with features like seating, better signage, and artwork that represents the city’s legacy. It’s about creating an interactive and welcoming experience for the public,” he explained.
The project, which will cost around Rs 80 million, is currently awaiting final approval from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB), the funding agency. Tendering is expected to begin shortly, with construction work likely to start within two months. The transformation will be carried out in four phases.
An official from the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA) said the redevelopment will cover the corridor from Chackai Junction to ITI and from All Saints’ College to the domestic terminal. “The stretch between ITI in Chackai and All Saints’ College also falls within the airport expansion area,” the official noted.
The broader City Beautification Project, announced in 2023–24, has earmarked Rs 1 billion to enhance the urban environment in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, and Ernakulam. In the capital, the project is jointly implemented by TRIDA and Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL), with three key projects under way.
Another major initiative includes beautification of the Chackai flyover and development of the area beneath the bridge. “We’re focusing on improving functionality and making public spaces more engaging and visually appealing,” added the official.
