Coimbatore District Completes Survey for Airport Approach Road

The Coimbatore district administration has completed a land survey to establish a 10.5-metre-wide access road along the Coimbatore Airport's new terminal campus, and the findings will be submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The exercise followed demands from residents and farmers in surrounding areas who had sought a guaranteed access route. The administration said the move aims to resolve connectivity concerns that emerged during the airport expansion.

A senior district official said the process to mark boundaries for the access road was completed on Monday and that an official appointed by the administration will prepare the survey report and a revised land map. The official added that the AAI is expected to give written permission in the coming days and that work on the airport boundary wall and access road would resume simultaneously once approval is granted. The statement indicated coordination between local authorities and the AAI to expedite next steps.

The land survey was prompted by farmer protests over a disputed road width after construction of the airport perimeter wall began on already acquired land. Farmers had opposed the work on the grounds that the wall cut off connectivity to agricultural land on both sides, and the demonstrations brought construction to a standstill. The protests made clear that further construction would be permitted only if a 10.5-metre access road was guaranteed.

Acting on directions from the district collector, the administration conducted an extensive survey to finalise a revised alignment for the approach road between Avinashi Road and the new terminal. The design envisages a 40-metre main road with two service roads on both sides and then, for around 1,750 metres, a carriageway laid at a width of 10.5 metres. Sources said that both the boundary wall and access road works will be carried out simultaneously to minimise further disruption.
