Modi Inaugurates Tuticorin Terminal, Unveils Rs 48 Billion Works

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal building at Tuticorin Airport and laid the foundation for development projects totalling Rs 48 billion in Tamil Nadu upon his return from the Maldives. The state-of-the-art terminal, spread across 17,340 square metres, is designed to handle 2 million passengers annually.
In road infrastructure, the Prime Minister dedicated the four-laning of the 50-km Sethiyathope–Cholapuram stretch of NH-36, which includes three bypasses, a one-kilometre four-lane bridge over the Kollidam River, four major bridges, seven flyovers, and several underpasses. The project is expected to enhance connectivity to the Delta region's cultural and agricultural centres.
He also inaugurated the six-laning of the 5.16-km NH-138 Tuticorin Port Road, constructed at a cost of around Rs 2 billion, aimed at improving cargo movement, reducing logistics costs, and supporting port-led industrial growth around V.O. Chidambaranar Port. Additionally, North Cargo Berth-III at the port, worth about Rs 2.85 billion, was inaugurated to increase cargo handling capacity.
In the railway sector, Modi inaugurated the electrification of the 99-km Madurai–Bodinayakkanur line. He also launched the Rs 6.5 billion doubling of the 21-km Nagercoil Town–Kanniyakumari section. Furthermore, the Aralvaymozhi–Nagercoil Junction and Tirunelveli–Melappalayam stretches were also doubled to improve southern connectivity.
Addressing the gathering, Prime Minister Modi said Tamil Nadu is undergoing unprecedented development, underscoring the Centre’s commitment to making the state a key contributor to ‘Viksit Bharat’. He emphasised that over the past 11 years, the government has prioritised infrastructure and energy, recognising them as critical to a state's growth. He added that modernising Tamil Nadu’s ports, airports, and highways remains a central focus to boost seamless connectivity and industrial potential.
