Stronger roads for stronger future with MAPEI Products

Bharatmala Pariyojana, managed by Road Transport and Highways Ministry of the Country (MORTH) is a new umbrella program for the highways sector that focuses on optimising the efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country by bridging critical infrastructure gaps through effective interventions like the development of Economic Corridors, Inter Corridors and Feeder Routes, National Corridor Efficiency Improvement, Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal and Port connectivity roads and Green-field expressways. Since the commencement of the project from December 2018, Mapei has been an integral part of the Bharatmala project. It has been responsible for supplying products like Concrete Admixtures, Curing compounds, fibres etc. Mapei India, with the “make in India” scheme, manufactures and supplies the products in India from the two plants located in Bangalore and Vadodara. Mapei products are also used worldwide for all infrastructure projects.

Some of the products supplied for the Bharatmala Project are discussed here:

Dynamon Range of Concrete Admixtures

Dynamon SX is a high performance, water-reducing admixture for concrete. It is based on polycarboxylate. Dynamon SX can be used when concrete requires a high level of workability and excellent mechanical properties when hardened. Dynamon SX has been designed for use in ready-mix and precast or pre-stress applications and where there is a need for greater water reduction, along with high mechanical strength. Its performance makes it particularly suitable for manufacturing self-consolidating concrete (SCC). Dynamon SX ensures high workability and cohesiveness in all concrete.

Mapecure range of Curing Compounds

Mapecure E 30/E50 (White) - Film-forming curing compound in water emulsion for concrete. Improves moisture retention in concrete. Complies with ASTM C-309 with excellent curing efficiency reducing shrinkage cracks.

Mapecure 101 - White pigmented acrylic resin based film-forming, curing, sealing & protective compound in water emulsion for concrete. Mapecure 101 eliminates the traditional protection method such as spraying water, wet burlap sacks, wet sand.

Polysulphide and Polyurethane Sealants

Polysulphide adhesives and sealants are often used in construction to seal off joints and channels. Polysulphide sealant provides a waterproof seal minimising the risk of water leaking into an area and causing damage or erosion.

In case of roads or bridges, which are exposed to extreme weather, the concrete itself must be protected against the damage from all the possibilities of water at the joints openings. The solid material must be prevented from falling and collecting in the open joints if so the joints cannot contract freely later. If this occurs, then high stress may be generated and can damage the concrete structure.

In the case of highways, the joints are needed to be strengthened and sealed to prevent the damage from heavy traffic. Hence, the function of a sealant is to restrict the entry of water, solids, gases and to protect the concrete structure from them.

The range of Polysulphide and Polyurethane sealants that can be used in Roads and Bridges are:

Product Description
Mapeflex PSU IN NS High-performance, non-sag, chemical resistant elastomeric joint system
Mapeflex PSU IN SL High-performance, self-levelling, chemical resistant elastomeric joint system
Mapeflex MS40 IN One component, high performance sealant based on Hybrid Polyurethane Technology
Mapeflex MS 45 One component, high performance sealant based on Hybrid Polyurethane Technology with an excellent UV, Weather and temperature resistance
Mapeflex AC1 IN This is an acrylic copolymer based white thixotropic paste specially formulated for sealing static gaps or cracks

Microfibres for concrete strengthening

Fibres are usually used in concrete to control cracking due to plastic shrinkage and due to drying shrinkage. They also reduce the permeability of concrete further reducing the bleeding of water. Fibres include steel fibers, glass fibers, synthetic fibers and natural fibers – each of which contributes varying properties to the concrete.

Mapei Mapefibre NS12/NS18 (Polypropylene fibres for concrete, 12mm/18mm long): Mapefibre NS12 /NS18 are 100 per cent virgin mono-filament polypropylene fibres which are resistant to alkalis and which do not absorb water. They have been specially developed to reduce the formation of cracks induced by hygrometric shrinkage of the concrete at the fresh and hardened stages.

Macrofibres: Macro synthetic fibres are typically used in structural concrete as a replacement for a nominal bar or fabric reinforcement. It can be used to provide the concrete with significant post-cracking capacity and hence can be used in some designs based on plastic analysis, such as for ground-supported slabs and for rock support using sprayed concrete.

Mapefibre BG 55: These are specially extruded, embossed and precision cut monofilament polypropylene structural fibres for high-performance fibre-reinforced concrete and sprayed concrete with high ductility. Mapefibre BG 55 are characterised by a high aspect ratio and a specifically embossed surface--this helps in achieving strong adhesion to the cementitious paste, therefore increasing the general performances of the fibres, including the concrete ductility.

Maintenance of Roads
Mapei solutions for the highway maintenance sector allow repair work to be carried out using products characterised by high mechanical performance characteristics, which remain durable over the years, including when subjected to heavy stresses. The systems proposed by Mapei meet the requirements of the market, which is becoming increasingly oriented towards the use of new technology and applications, as well as the specific needs of contractors.

Mapegrout SV: Hi-flow, compensated-shrinkage, rapid-setting and hardening mortar available in grey and back for repairing concrete floors and anchoring manholes, drain covers and street furniture and features.

Planiseal Traffic coat EU: Solvent-free, rapid-hardening, epoxy resin-based system used in combination with Bauxite White 1-3 selected, aluminium silicate-based aggregates with high resistance to abrasion. This system is of great advantage when used to form non-slip concrete surfaces on roads and motorways, including those exposed to intense vehicle traffic, loading and unloading bays, carparks and floors in industrial environments. This system also increases the service life of treated surfaces and protects them from freeze or thaw cycles and the presence of de-icing salts.

Tunnel projects

Mapei has been part of many tunnel projects including the recently inaugurated Atal Tunnel and has contributed various products for the same.
