Coimbatore District Completes Survey For Airport Approach Road

The Coimbatore district administration has completed a land survey for a 10.5-metre-wide access road along the new terminal campus at Coimbatore Airport, a step taken in response to demands from local residents and farmers and intended to resolve a dispute over road width. The findings will be submitted to the Airports Authority of India for formal consideration. The work follows months of engagement between officials and local stakeholders over access and connectivity.

A senior district official said the process to mark the boundaries for the access road was completed on Monday and that an official appointed by the administration will prepare the survey report and a revised land map. The official indicated that the Airports Authority of India is expected to give written permission for the road work in the coming days and that work on the airport boundary wall and the access road is expected to resume simultaneously once approval is granted. The administration has presented the revised alignment to address concerns raised by the protestors.

The land survey was triggered by farmer protests after construction of the airport perimeter wall on land already acquired was alleged to have cut off connectivity to agricultural holdings on both sides of the wall. Those protests brought construction to a standstill until assurances on an access route were secured. Acting on directions from the district collector, officials undertook an extensive survey to finalise the revised alignment and to ensure that existing access to parcels of land would be preserved.

The approved approach will link Avinashi Road to the new terminal, featuring a 40-metre main road flanked by two service roads. For a stretch of around 1,750 metres the carriageway will be laid at a width of 10.5 metres to guarantee direct access to fields and residences. Both the main and the access roadworks are planned to be carried out simultaneously to minimise disruption and to restore connectivity at the earliest.
