Eastern Freeway Extension Work Begins

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially begun construction work on the long-awaited Eastern Freeway extension, a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at easing traffic congestion between Mumbai and Thane.

As part of this expansion, an elevated corridor is being constructed between Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar and Anand Nagar in Thane. Initial groundwork has commenced, with barricades and pillar excavation visible along the highway.

Spanning 12.955 kilometers, the elevated flyover will rise directly above the existing Eastern Express Highway, with three lanes in each direction. The project is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 26.82 billion. Once completed, the corridor is expected to deliver much-needed traffic relief on one of Mumbai’s busiest routes.

This new elevated road will offer a signal-free commute from Mumbai to Thane, cutting travel time to just 30–35 minutes. It will connect directly with the existing Eastern Freeway, ensuring an uninterrupted journey for vehicles traveling from South Mumbai to Thane.

The current Eastern Freeway, a 16.8-kilometer stretch from PD Mello Road near CSMT to Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, has been operational since 2014. While it significantly improved connectivity out of South Mumbai, bottlenecks between Mankhurd and Thane have remained a major issue. The new flyover is designed to eliminate these choke points.

Fast-Tracked Land Clearance A significant milestone was achieved through speedy land acquisition. Thanks to efforts by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the traditionally slow process was completed in record time. A key hurdle was the presence of 1,694 slum units in the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar area.

In a first-of-its-kind move, MMRDA will undertake a full-scale slum redevelopment project to pave the way for the corridor’s construction. The government has already cleared this plan, allowing progress without delays.
