First double-decker flyover along metro route opens in Mira-Bhayander

To facilitate the construction of this flyover and the integrated Metro viaduct, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) relocated around 3 kilometers of the main double-circuit Dahanu-Versova power generation line. The line was elevated to 75 meters above ground level, making it the second-tallest of its kind in Maharashtra. Precast I-girder technology was utilised to expedite construction and ensure high-quality standards.

Completed in just two years, the flyover?s U-girders were raised during the day without disrupting traffic, thanks to the use of the 'Tyre Straddle Carrier' technology, which allows vehicles to pass through its arms?unlike cranes that typically block traffic. This innovation was crucial, given that approximately 800 vehicles use this road every hour.

Chief Minister Shinde emphasised the project's significance, stating, "This flyover will resolve traffic problems, saving both time and fuel for commuters. Built with modern technology and efficient planning, this project will accelerate development in the Mumbai metropolitan area and enhance the overall traffic flow, making commuting more comfortable for citizens."

Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, Commissioner, MMRDA, added, "Given the space constraints in Mumbai and its suburbs, this flyover was designed to integrate with Metro pillars. Commuters will now see the Metro operating on the upper level while vehicles travel on the flyover below, with road-level traffic moving smoothly. This project offers a modern solution to Mumbai?s transportation needs, reducing congestion and providing a faster, safer, and more convenient travel experience for all." (IE)
