Gorakhpur Link Expressway to be operational soon

The 92-kilometre-long Gorakhpur Link Expressway, which connects the city to the Purvanchal Expressway, will be opened to the public soon. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath set a December deadline for the completion of the Gorakhpur Link Expressway in February. The project, which began in February 2020, will cost Rs 5,877 crore, including land costs.

More than 62% of the construction work has been completed thus far. Once completed, the motorway will ensure smooth vehicular traffic movement from Gorakhpur to Lucknow, Agra, and Delhi.

While clearing and grubbing work has been completed, civil work on the main carriageway is currently underway, including granular sub-base (GSB), wet mix macadam (WMM), and dense bituminous macadam (DBM).

The four-lane (expandable to six lanes) expressway begins at Jaitpur on NH-27 in Gorakhpur district and links with the Purvanchal Expressway near Salarpur in Azamgarh district. The access-controlled expressway spans across four districts — Gorakhpur, Sant Kabir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Azamgarh.

The nodal agency, Uttar Pradesh Expressway Development Authority (UPEIDA), is carrying out this project in the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) mode. For implementation, the project has been divided into two packages. While one company is working on the project's 47-kilometer-long package-1, another is working on package-2, which is 43.03 kilometres long. Two toll plazas, three ramp plazas, seven flyovers, 16 vehicular underpasses, 50 light vehicular underpasses, 35 pedestrian underpasses, seven major bridges, 27 minor bridges, and 389 culverts are also being built as part of the motorway. A separate link road will connect the Gorakhpur Link Expressway to Varanasi, according to a UPEIDA spokesperson.

The motorway is expected to serve as an industrial corridor, connecting various manufacturing units. Keeping this in mind, the latest budget includes a Rs 200 crore allocation for the Industrial Corridor along the Gorakhpur-link Expressway.
