Hoskote-TN border segment of Bengaluru's STRR project set for launch

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made significant progress on the Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project. The latest segment, connecting Hoskote to the Tamil Nadu border, is expected to be operational by March 2025. This addition will extend the STRR's total length to 102.6 kilometers, with the entire project projected to cover 288 kilometers and be completed by 2027.

To encourage early usage, the NHAI plans to open this section toll-free for the first few months after its inauguration. Once tolls are introduced, rates are anticipated to be lower than those currently applied to the existing two STRR segments. Project Director KB Jayakumar noted that construction on the new stretch is halfway complete and remains on track for a February-March launch. Designed as a greenfield project, this route promises reduced toll fees once fully operational.

“The railways have granted clearance, and foundation work has commenced. The rail overbridge (ROB) will be ready by February,” Jayakumar stated.

Currently, users traveling the existing Dabbaspet-Hoskote section pay ₹185 for a single trip and ₹275 for a round trip within 24 hours, averaging ₹2.2 per kilometer for single journeys. The new 102.6 km stretch will feature six lanes and an 11-meter-wide median to improve traffic flow, similar to the NICE Road layout. It will also provide essential access to the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (NE 7), significantly enhancing travel efficiency between these two major cities.

Additionally, a critical rail overbridge at Lingadeeramallasandra, along the Bengaluru-Chennai railway line, is progressing well, with foundation work underway following the necessary approvals. The project also includes the completion of eleven underpasses, highlighting the ongoing advancement of the STRR. Once finalized, the STRR will serve as an essential bypass for heavy vehicles, helping to alleviate congestion within Bengaluru.

This route, designated as National Highway 648 from Dabbaspet to the Tamil Nadu border, is crucial for enhancing Bengaluru's transportation infrastructure. Tenders have been issued for the remaining five sections of the STRR, which will cover 144.25 kilometers at an estimated cost of ₹4,749.74 crore, with a target completion date within two years.
