India Expands EV Charging Network with 5,293 Stations

India's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure is set to grow significantly, with the current total of 5,293 EV charging stations along national highways. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways announced plans to establish an additional 5,833 stations, aiming for a total of 7,432 stations across the country.

In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, revealed that a capital subsidy of Rs 8 billion has been allocated to three oil marketing companies for the establishment of these charging stations.

Of the existing 5,293 stations, 4,729 were set up under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at a cost of Rs 1.78 billion. Minister Gadkari highlighted that the Ministry of Heavy Industries is also involved in the target of adding more charging stations through partnerships with oil marketing companies.

Currently, the government does not have plans to establish power stations specifically for EV charging alongside national highways.

Maharashtra leads the country with the highest number of EV charging stations, boasting 750 installations. Other states following suit include Uttar Pradesh (577), Rajasthan (482), Tamil Nadu (369), Karnataka (300), and Haryana (284).

Additionally, the deadline for the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024 has been set for July 31. This scheme aims to enhance green mobility and foster the development of the EV manufacturing ecosystem in India, with an outlay of Rs 5 billion over four months. The total payout under this scheme is capped at Rs 4.94 billion, which supports 372,215 vehicles, with claims processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The two-wheeler industry is expected to sustain a steady growth rate of approximately 7 to 9 percent in FY25, further contributing to the expansion of electric mobility in the country.
