NHAI Begins Trial Run of Dwarka Expressway Tunnel

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has started a trial run for tunnel and underpasses on the Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway to ease traffic on the Delhi–Gurugram stretch of National Highway 48. The trial runs will be held daily from 12 noon to three pm starting 29 May 2025.

The key facility includes a shallow tunnel linking Dwarka and Yashobhumi with Indira Gandhi International Airport via airport underpasses. Commuters from Terminal Three can also use this route to access Gurugram. Vehicles can also travel from Dwarka to Sirhaul via the shallow tunnel and right-turn underpass.

The trial will allow NHAI to assess traffic behaviour, safety standards, and operational efficiency. The tunnel restricts entry to vehicles under four-point-five metres in height, excluding two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and those transporting flammable materials.

Equipped with emergency exits, CCTV surveillance, and a control room, the tunnel is expected to become fully operational from five June 2025.

This strategic project will improve connectivity between Delhi, Gurugram, and northern cities by reducing surface road congestion and facilitating smoother access to the airport and surrounding areas.
