Over 60% of 8,391-km Expressway Projects Completed: Nitin Gadkari

According to the minister, 2,730 km of the expressway network is now operational, a significant jump from just 228 km in March 2020. The ministry is prioritising the construction of access-controlled expressways to enhance logistics efficiency and support the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.

Expansion of National Highway Network
In addition to expressways, the government has finalised an annual plan for the development of 19,555 km of National Highways for the current financial year. This includes major capacity augmentation projects aimed at streamlining national connectivity.

Currently, 1,240 highway projects spanning 29,406 km, with a cumulative investment of Rs 7.80 lakh crore, are under various stages of construction. Of this, 15,674 km has already been completed, and the remaining projects are expected to be delivered in phases by FY 2028–29.

City Decongestion and Port Connectivity
To further boost logistics efficiency and reduce urban traffic bottlenecks, the ministry is developing ring roads, bypasses, and elevated corridors across major cities, urban centres, and state capitals. These projects are being undertaken in consultation with respective state governments to decongest National Highways and improve port connectivity.

Upgrading Highway Standards
The government has also adopted a policy to upgrade highways to 4, 6, or 8 lanes, depending on traffic needs. All National Highways are being developed to at least two lanes with paved shoulders, except in ecologically sensitive Himalayan regions, where plans are tailored based on geological and environmental assessments.
