Road Widening at Nanthoor Junction Eases Traffic Flow

Nanthoor Junction in Mangaluru has seen a significant improvement in traffic flow after the recent road widening and asphalting efforts aimed at reducing congestion. The junction, which connects NH-66 and divides the city, was notorious for traffic gridlocks, especially during peak hours. The completion of the vehicular overpass (VoP) and the widening of NH-66’s flanks to construct service roads has played a crucial role in alleviating the problem.

In the past, long queues were a common sight, with mile-long traffic jams at Bikarnakatte and KPT directions, and over half a kilometer of congestion on Pumpwell and Kadri roads. However, following the upgrades, traffic flow has improved significantly, reducing wait times by more than half.

Traffic East police inspector, Anand E, confirms that the asphalting and service roads have made a noticeable difference. The new free-left turns from KPT-Padavu to Bikkarnakatte and from Bikkarnakatte to Pumpwell have eased the flow, allowing smoother transitions for vehicles.

Despite these improvements, challenges remain. Traffic constable Sharat highlights that large vehicles like gas tankers and container trucks still cause some gridlocks, especially at the KPT-Padavu and Bikkarnakatte intersections due to their size and slower movement. Anand further notes that the absence of signal lights at the junction means traffic personnel must remain posted to manage the flow and prevent motorists from cutting across lanes, which could cause jams.

While the situation has improved, authorities indicate that further measures are required, especially once the VoP project is fully realized, to ensure smoother traffic operations at this vital junction.
