Rs 2.3 Billion Flyover Planned to Ease Velachery Traffic

The city corporation has initiated the process for constructing a new flyover in Velachery, with the tender value estimated at Rs 2.32 billion. According to civic officials, tenders have been floated this week, and the project is expected to be completed within 30 months from the date of the work order.
The proposed flyover will stretch from the Sardar Patel Road–Velachery Main Road junction to the Guru Nanak College junction, as announced in this year’s budget. The 3-kilometre, undivided three-lane structure will address traffic bottlenecks at Race Course Road, Five Furlong Road, and the Velachery Bypass junction. The flyover will be 11 metres wide and is aimed at reducing congestion for over 200,000 residents in Velachery, Guindy, and nearby areas.
A corporation official said that the 30-month timeline also includes time for utility shifting and design finalisation. The project requires 191 square metres of private land and 461 square metres of government land, including a portion of 2,055 square feet marked for acquisition.
To further improve traffic flow, uni-directional down ramps are proposed—5.5 metres wide at Five Furlong Road and 4 metres wide near Guru Nanak College. In addition, a 5.5-metre-wide service road and a 1.5-metre-wide footpath are planned on both sides of the flyover.
According to a traffic survey, the Velachery Bypass–Sardar Patel Road junction near Phoenix Mall and the Five Furlong Road junction experience significant congestion. Peak hour traffic volumes were recorded at 7,742 Passenger Car Units (PCU) per hour at the Guru Nanak College junction and 7,459 PCU/hr at Five Furlong Road junction. The survey revealed that 57 per cent of traffic moves between Velachery Bypass and Sardar Patel Road, while 26 per cent travels between Velachery Bypass and Five Furlong Road.
Once completed, the flyover is expected to ease congestion and improve travel efficiency across some of South Chennai’s busiest corridors.
