Tamil Nadu Clears Rs 80 Billion Plan To Upgrade 20,000 km Rural Roads

The Tamil Nadu Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 80 billion for the Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam, a programme to rebuild 20,000 km of rural roads. Since the scheme’s launch in 2022 23, 12,572 km across 9,690 schemes have been finished at a cost of Rs 46.09 billion. A further 6,671 km are under construction for Rs 35.29 billion.

Parallel investment under the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam initiative aims to make the state hut free by 2030. The government has set aside Rs 70 billion to build 200,000 houses within two years; 72,081 units are complete and the remainder are progressing. Beneficiaries can access bank loans of up to Rs 1 million for added support.

For older government built homes dating from before 2000 01, Rs 10.41 billion has been earmarked in 2024 25 to renovate 148,000 dwellings.

Road upgrades continue under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, where Tamil Nadu is improving 947 roads and 83 bridges totalling 4,182 km at an estimated Rs 30.61 billion, funded 60 per cent by the Centre and 40 per cent by the state. Another 283 roads and 308 bridges spanning more than 500 km have been delivered through the NABARD Rural Infrastructure Development Fund for Rs 11.82 billion.

Additional rural works include Rs 2.61 billion to refurbish Periyar Memorial Samathuvarpurams and Rs 42.77 billion for development projects in 10,187 village panchayats under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.

Collectively, these initiatives are expected to create about 0.84 million direct and 1.045 million indirect person days of employment while improving mobility, housing, tourism and livelihoods across Tamil Nadu.
