Tamil Nadu Approves Rs 8,000 Crore For Rural Road Upgrade

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore to upgrade 20,000 km of rural roads under the Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam (MGSMT), the Chief Minister’s Rural Roads Development Scheme.

As per the state’s Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, 9,690 projects spanning 12,572 km have already been completed at a cost of Rs 4,609 crore. Work on an additional 6,671 km is underway, supported by Rs 3,529 crore in funding. Launched in 2022–23, the MGSMT aims to boost rural infrastructure and improve last-mile connectivity.

Alongside road development, the government is expanding the Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam Scheme to make Tamil Nadu hut-free by 2030. A total of Rs 7,000 crore has been approved to construct two lakh houses over the next two years. To date, 72,081 homes have been completed, with the remainder at various stages of construction.

For rural homes built before 2000–01, the state has allocated Rs 1,041.32 crore in FY25 to renovate 1.48 lakh structures across villages. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to inclusive rural development and improved living standards.
