Thane-Borivali Twin Tunnel Project will be awarded L&T and Megha

For the construction of one package each of the 11.84 km Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project in Mumbai, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) were chosen as the lowest bids. MMRDA had issued two separate tenders for its civil construction in December 2022. The Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), the only national park in the world to be situated inside a metropolitan region, will be traversed by a portion of the proposed tunnel.

The Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project, which entails building an east-west traffic corridor to link Mulund in the eastern suburbs with Goregaon in the western suburbs, includes the Thane- Borivali tunnel project. With a four-year completion date, the MMRDA had requested bids for its civil construction under two packages in December 2022. At the moment, there is no direct connection between these locations, thus commuters must divert through Ghodbunder Road in Thane or Powai.

Both of these highways are still congested during rush hour.

Twin tunnels totaling 10.8 km in length and an additional km in approach roads on both ends (Thane and Borivali) make up the proposed project. There have been new road construction projects totaling 23.68 km, including a tunnel. Four enormous tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will be used to construct the three-lane tunnels, which would connect Magathane's Ekta Nagar in Borivali and Tikuji-Ni-Wadi in Thane, at a maximum depth of 23 m below the surface.

In the Mumbai metropolitan area (MMR), it currently takes more than an hour to get from the western suburb of Borivali to the eastern suburb of Thane. Travel time will be cut to just 15 minutes after this 11.84 km-long road project is completed beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The project would cost Rs. 132 billion and is anticipated to take five years to complete. It would call for the purchase of 40.46 hectares of land in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and 16.54 hectares of private land.

There will be connected tunnels for emergencies, three lanes in each tunnel for a total of six. Along with technological security, the tunnel will also have a sophisticated ventilation and lighting system. The plan also includes a provision for a linear heat detection system. There are SOS boxes that commuters can use in case of an emergency within 500 metres. The tunnel will be dug 23 metres below ground.
